After challenging Derby County’s lack of investment prior to their catastrophic Premier League season, Billy Davies recalled the day he was fired and predicted it would happen.
As the team struggled in the top level and was relegated back to the Championship, Davies was fired following a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in November 2007.
When he left, Derby was at the bottom of the league, and he remembered how then-chairman Adam Pearson had called him to the training ground.
However, Davies was aware of what was about to happen as soon as he walked into the room and disclosed that he was going to be named BBC East Midlands’ manager of the year on the Monday after his departure.
I remember the day,” he told Open Goal. “I had a Chelsea press conference after they beat us 2-0 at Pride Park. I came out and asked the press to evaluate where the money had went following the promotion for Derby County because we needed to spend more money.
