During Newcastle’s brief stay in the Championship in 2016/17 former Crystal Palace striker Dwight Gayle donned the number nine shirt for the Magpies and boy did he live up to the shirt in that season.
Gayle managed 23 goals in 32 appearances as Newcastle bounced straight back to the Premier League, however, Gayle was one of those players who needed another league between the Premier League and the Championship.
He was far too good for the Championship and found scoring easy, but once he stepped up to Premier League level he found goals very hard to come by. In fact, Gayle only scored 11 more goals for Newcastle outside of the 23 he bagged in the second-tier.
