After a “furious” Monza admission, Mercedes releases stunning GPS data for Lewis Hamilton.

Lewis Hamilton’s feelings are understandable to Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, given the data showing how a pole position challenge at Monza went wrong. Although teammate George Russell leads Hamilton 12-4 in the race, qualifying hasn’t always been the highlight of his F1 2024 season. However, the Italian Grand Prix elicited an especially strong response from a “furious” Hamilton as he was relegated to P6 on the grid.

Data from Lewis Hamilton reveals crucial last-corner struggles at Monza. In the end, less than two tenths separated Lando Norris on pole and Hamilton in P6, who expressed his “Furious” feelings to Sky F1 during the intense duel for pole position. I’m so angry because I could have been pole. That assertion is corroborated by the data, with Shovlin indicating that Hamilton was pursuing the pole but that his chances were dashed at the last bend. During Mercedes’ post-race debriefing in Italy, Shovlin was asked if Hamilton’s anger meant that a little bit of pace was lost. He answered, “I’m sure we could’ve done a bit better.” And when you examine the GPS data to see it going through, you can clearly understand where Lewis’s issues stem from.
