The Tennessee Volunteers were ranked outside of the first 12-team College Football Playoff by ESPN before to the season.

One of the most well-liked preseason teams on the College Football Playoff bubble is the Tennessee Volunteers. The Vols are predicted by most observers to either finish in the first round of the 12-team College Football Playoffs or finish just outside of it this coming season. For the past three years, head coach Josh Heupel has been preparing the program for this very moment. He has retooled his roster, signed star quarterback Nico Iamaleava, developed a resume and ingrained a culture within the Knoxville, Tennessee, building. This is the year, if ever there was one, for them to make the CFP. Author Heather Dinich of ESPN predicted Tennessee to be among the “first four” in their mock playoff, which was issued prior of this weekend’s season opener.
