Schweiz’s Schaffhausen — Following a hard-fought defeat in the global men’s curling championship, Brad Gushue’s Canadian team stormed into the semifinals with two decisive six-end wins. Gushue and his St. John’s, N.L., team of Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden, and Geoff Walker won two decisive games on Friday, 8-1 against the host Switzerland and 9-3 against Japan, to wrap up the round robin in second place at 10-2. Gushue’s placing in the top two was crucial because it sent Canada straight to the semifinals on Saturday without of having to go through the playoff qualification round. “We don’t know the ice conditions for tomorrow, what each team can accomplish in those conditions, or who will be able to do it.”
