BREAKING NEWS: Hugo Keenan and Ireland are out of the Madrid Sevens event after losing to Fiji and New Zealand.

Hugo Keenan and the Irish Sevens squad were reminded of how difficult things will be in Paris this summer as they were heartbreakingly eliminated from the Madrid Sevens event.

Ireland defeated South Africa on Friday, but fell to Fiji 26-21 in overtime this morning and needed a win over New Zealand to advance.

Fullback for Ireland and Leinster Keenan scored a late try to tie the game at 17-17 and give them a chance to win, but SeΓ‘n Cribbin missed the conversion, and New Zealand scored the golden point to send Ireland home.

Earlier, the Ireland women missed out on the final four after losing to Australia on Friday with a 31-5 defeat to France, meaning their Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe-inspired 26-19 victory against Fiji came too late.

Both teams will compete for the minor positions tomorrow.
