For starters, the J League club is unlikely to fulfill Celtic’s asking price. Second, they are unlikely to be able to match or exceed Kyogo’s financial package, having only signed a contract renewal with Celtic last summer. Kyogo to Urawa Dragons Third, if Kyogo chose to go, it would most likely be to one of Europe’s top five leagues, rather than back to the J-League. At this point in his career, that would be a nonstarter.
But there’s a transfer rumour, and just a few weeks before the window opens, the entire media is all over it. It comes from a Japan-based account called Marco Molla, who reports that Japanese side Urawa Dragons are interested in bringing the striker back home this summer.
Celtic fans do not want to lose Kyogo; despite a terrible season by his standards, he remains a crucial and well-liked component of the squad, and we want to keep him. Some may say that the draw of a return to his birthplace is too powerful for Kyogo, and at 29, the club may want to cash in while his worth is still high, in keeping with our transfer policy.
The only stumbling problem, and one that I believe renders this nothing more than a hearsay, is whether Urawa can reach Celtic’s value of Kyogo. According to the transfer market, the J League sides’ record transfer spend to date is €5 million.
If Kyogo leaves, we will have to pay at least twice as much. Urawa would have to break both their own transfer record and the J League record of €11 million, which has stood for six years.
Urawa apparently has money to spend after qualifying for the all-new World Cup in 2025. A figure estimated to be around £40 million.
