Just as Yankees ace Gerrit Cole meets hitters; expected comeback in June.

New York — Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees’ ace, believes he will be able to return to the major league mound in June after seeing hitters for the first time since spring training.

 

Wearing a full pinstriped outfit, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner threw 20 pitches to Oswaldo Cabrera and Jamai Jones prior to Tuesday night’s game against Seattle.

 

Cole had completed five bullpen sessions prior to the batting practice. The 33-year-old right-hander, who is dealing with elbow nerve inflammation and edema, plans to undergo one or two more BP sessions before beginning a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

Chicago — On Tuesday, the Chicago Cubs activated shortstop Dansby Swanson from the 10-day disabled list and brought up infielder Luis Vázquez from Triple-A Iowa.

 

Swanson, 30, was placed on the disabled list May 8 due to a right knee strain. He is swinging the bat.In 37 games, he had 209 hits, including three doubles, one triple, and four home runs.

 

After hitting, Vázquez, 24, received his first major league call-up.In 39 games with Iowa, he hit 262 with ten doubles and three home runs.

 

On Tuesday night, the Cubs opened a home series against Swanson’s previous team, Atlanta. He was in the lineup, hitting eighth and playing shortstop. The Cubs optioned Pete Crow-Armstrong and infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to Iowa.
