Record-breaking managerial win rates, stellar scoring stats and an unwanted milestone to avoid

Philippe Clement and Brendan Rodgers

With the help of our friends at Opta, BBC Scotland has been digging through Old Firm derby facts and figures as we look towards Sunday’s seismic encounter at Ibrox.

But what are the stand out numbers around this weekend’s showdown?

Top spot with Celtic, but form with Rangers

Todd Cantwell and Callum McGregor

Rangers had amassed seven more league points than its opponents in 2024, despite being one spot and a point behind league leaders Celtic going into this rivalry.

Even though they have played one more game, their total of 30 points is higher than their neighbours’ 23 points.

This year, Philippe Clement’s team has won ten of their eleven league games; their lone loss came against Celtic in the first week of January.

Record-breaking Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers

In his 15 managerial encounters with Rangers in all competitions, Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers has won 12, drawn 2, and lost just once.

Since rejoining the team last summer, he has won both of his matches, with an 80% victory record that is the greatest of any manager in the history of the Old Firm Derby in major competitions.

Tavernier’s derby numbers

James Tavernier

Six of James Tavernier’s 127 assists and five of his 122 goals for the Rangers have come in Old Firm derbies.

With 15 league goals this season, one less than his competition record of 16 in 2022–2023—the right-back made history last weekend by becoming the highest-scoring defender in British history.

Additionally, he has now directly contributed to 150 Premiership goals in his career (78 goals, 72 assists), more than any other player since the league’s rebranding in 2013.

Unwanted record to avoid

Ross McCausland

Only one of Rangers’ nine previous encounters with Celtic in all competitions has resulted in a victory—a 3-0 home win in the league last season, which came after their opponents had already clinched the championship.

The Ibrox team might lose their first three Old Firm games in a league season for the first time since 2003–04 under Alex McLeish after losing both of their derbies this season.

The man for the big occasion

Kyogo Furuhashi

Kyogo Furuhashi has scored in both meetings between Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership this season, which takes his tally in the fixture to seven goals in 11 derbies.

The last player to net in three league encounters in the same season was his former team-mate Tom Rogic in 2017-18.

Since Rangers returned to the top flight in 2016, only Odsonne Edouard (seven) and Mark O’Hara (six) have scored more Premiership goals against the Ibrox side than Kyogo (five).
