This offseason, the San Francisco Giants made significant improvements to their squad. The offense should be boosted by Jung Hoo Lee, Matt Chapman, and Jorge Soler, but manager Bob Melvin’s team still needs more strength. Is Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. a possible midseason trade target?
One of the predictions made by Jim Bowden of The Athletic was that Guerrero would end up in the Bay in 2024. He’s expecting turmoil come July 30th, and this was just a small portion of it. “First basemen are dominating the news as the July 30 trade deadline approaches: the Mets trade Pete Alonso to the Cubs, the Cardinals trade Paul Goldschmidt to the Astros (advancing from a declining JosΓ© Abreu), and the Blue Jays trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (along with his extra year of team control) to the Giants,” he stated on March 25.
For the third consecutive year, Guerrero played in more than 150 games in 2023. In 682 plate appearances, he hit.264,.345, and.444, with 26 home runs and 26 RBI. After a breakthrough 2021 campaign, his power numbers declined for the third consecutive season. That season, he had 48 home runs and 111 RBI. Before his 2023 output, he had 2022 with 32 home runs and 97 RBI.
Despite his declining numbers in recent years, Vlad Jr.’s campaign will just be his age-25 one in 2024. Being the lone player with a contract that extends past 2024 sets him.
